Letting someone new into your home to clean can feel like a big step, especially if you have always done it yourself. The good news is that a little thought beforehand makes every visit easier, and helps you get exactly the help you want.
1. Decide what matters most
In an hour or two, it is not always possible to do everything every time. Think about which jobs make the biggest difference to you. For many people it is the kitchen and bathroom, the floors, or the jobs that mean bending and stretching. Make a short list in order of importance.
2. Mention anything special
Every home has its quirks. Let your cleaner know about:
- Delicate ornaments or furniture that need gentle handling.
- Rooms you would rather were left alone.
- Any products you prefer, or any you or your pets react to.
- Pets, and whether they need keeping in or out.
3. Keep the supplies in one place
A bucket or box with your cloths, sprays and polish in one cupboard saves time hunting for things. If you are running low on anything, pop it on your shopping list.
4. Clear a little space
There is no need to tidy before the cleaner comes. That is what they are there for. But clearing the odd pile of papers from the table or the worktop means surfaces can be cleaned properly, and nothing important gets moved.
5. Agree a regular day
A regular day and time helps everyone. You know when to expect a visit, and it becomes part of the week rather than something to think about. If something comes up, such as a hospital appointment, just let them know in good time.
6. Talk about how it is going
After the first few visits, have a quick chat. Is there anything you would like done differently? Anything that could wait for another week? Good help at home fits around you, so it is worth saying.
It is your home
Above all, you are in charge. A good cleaner will do things the way you like them done, and will be glad to know your preferences. You can read more about our regular home cleaning on our services page.
